VMI has developed a line of tire assembly systems capable of producting a large range of passenger car, light truck, all steel truck & bus and other tires in various sizes, conforming to TRA and ETRO standards. These machines enable tire manufacturers to meet today's demand for high quality tires at competitive costs. They include automatic measuring, cutting, and positioning of the various components, dynamic breaker positioning, fast size change, automatic green tire removel and machine performance monitoring. With these and other features VMI provides it's customers the highest quality and lowest manufacturing cost per tire.
Sub systems of the tire building machines decribed hereafter are available to boost performance or existing older tire building machines.
Mechanical carcass building and shaping drum
The patented mechanical carcass building and shaping drum is available for all VMI’s single stage radial passenger tire assembly machines, and is designed for bead ranges from 13” up to 24" The carcass is built in the same way as on the existing bladder type drum, however the turn-up of the sidewall and body ply (or body plies) is made by the drum’s mechanical arms. The mechanical drum replaces the traditional system of roll-over cans and bladders. Since there is no need of bladders anymore and bladder replacement time disappears, the cost per tire decreases. Also it is proven that green tires assembled on the mechanical drum have a better uniformity than the ones assembled on a bladder type drum.

Carcass building & shaping drum with high shoulder
This drum is designed to assemble a green tire from serviced components. The high shoulder supports the lower bead/apex inside area during turn-up and shaping, in order to reduce deformation and to improve component consolidation in the bead area. The drum is available for tire sizes with bead diameters of 12” to 20”. Under certain conditions this drum can be used on transfer type tire building machines of other makes.

Breaker & tread building drum
This drum is designed to assemble the breaker & tread package for radial passenger tires. Although the drum has primarily been designed for use with VMI radial passenger single stage or second stage radial passenger tire building systems, it can, certain conditions fulfilled, also be used on tire building machines of other makes.
