VMI provides an impressive line of tire assembly systems capable of producing an extensive range of passenger car, light truck, all steel truck and bus plus other tires in various sizes, conforming to TRA and ETRO standards. These machines enable tire manufacturers to meet current demand for high quality tires at competitive prices and include automatic measuring, cutting and positioning of the various components, dynamic breaker positioning, swift size change, automatic green tire removal and machine performance monitoring.
Sub systems of the tire building machines (described below) are also available to boost performance of existing older tire building machines.
Flexible tire Building cells: Modular tire manuacturing (MTM) systems
As the current trend for smaller series of tires does not comfortably suit the industry's traditional tire manufacturing process, VMI offers a revolutionary solution with its Modular Tire Manufacturing (MTM) facility which is a completely self contained tire building cell that has been exclusively developed to solve this problem.
The MTM provides the ultimate in flexibility in order to respond at short notice to demands for different types and sizes of specialised tyres. It produces tires of higher quality at a lower cost per tire than traditional large scale tire building on high volume machinery from stock piled components. A major advantage of the MTM is that the cell eliminates complex planning and logistics required in conventional tire production which is geared to high volume in a sequence of multiple processes needing large buffer capacity after each step.

VMI's MTM cell includes all process steps from rubber components and reinforcement, green tire manufacture, curing and finishing to quality control resulting in a tire ready to mount on a rim. The cell also incorporates the very latest tire building technology to produce consistent, quality uniform tires at high speed at the lowest possible cost per tire.
It manufacturers up to 1200 radial tires a day for a bead range from 14 up to 22 inches in different
sizes for passenger cars, high performance, ultra high performance, SUV's, light trucks and run flat
tires in both small and large volumes.
The cell is configured around a highly flexible tire building machine incorporating a set of six dual cavity presses and a cell controller that individually programs each tire. The controller can programme automatic change of widths and the outside diameter of the tire and up to 12 different tire sizes can be produced concurrently without manual intervention or loss of cycle time.

When developing the MTM, VMI ensured that some of the modules could be used to upgrade existing tire building machinery giving them increased flexibility. Apart from new tooling for assembling the B&T package and carcass components, a complete new range of direct extrusion systems for breaker production, body ply strips and compound strip winders (for winding sidewalls and tread compounds) has been developed. The automatic bead apex production line, automatic bead apex handling components and green tire removal can all transform the existing VMI248-SL and VMI348 tire building machine into totally hands-off production units.
On of the most revolutionary developments is the Baldwin 2x30, a flexible breaker maker servicer system which is available as a stand-alone breaker service unit for VMI's radial passenger tire assembly machines – VMI248-SL and VMI248-S or other brand tire building machines. The breaker maker comprises of a creel let-off, gear pump extruder with cross-head die for two strips, cooling drums, cutting positioning unit and the application conveyor's servers. From each strip of 30 mm a breaker can be produced with a pre-defined width, angle and length. The breaker maker is so flexible that when another angle and or width is required the change-over time is of negligible.
